Indeed, one week meown and three-ish to go.
-Mary Clancy Healey is no longer in the plays, please remove her and replace her with another actor (if necessary).
-Blackbox Directors: Good work today! Make sure you are directing while sitting down (I think that is want Ms. Howston wants you to do)
-An email has been sent: I will be discussing with the other Advisors the "leaving early dilemma"
-Next time you meet with your actors make sure they WROTE the stage directions DOWN. I saw alot of actors (not just today) not writing anything down. I fear that they did not think to write anything down.
-DIRECTORS: IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE LATE, LET ANOTHER DIRECTOR KNOW!

So today I worked with Sasha and James and it was okay.
ReplyDeleteSasha cooperated and did really well when we ran through it, James was a little more all over the place, but I'm think it's hard for him to take me seriously as an "authority figure" because he's my friend and I joke around a lot with him. So I'm not really sure how to handle that. Suggestions??
Also, I kinda wanted varsity jackets for the sports players in my play. Any ideas how I can cover the Pennington logo without it looking tacky or weird?
AHHHH ! at least I got a lot done today.
Let me know if you have any suggestions!!! I really need help with that stuff!
So today since most of my actors were working this directors in the Black Box (except for probably Sasha, James, and Don) I decided to find some costumes and get it organized now rather than a week before the show. I found a dress for James (yesss) and all of the girls...and working on Don's outfit (tweed jacket?)
ReplyDeleteYesterday our time in the black box went really well, but like you said a lot of people didn't write things down (good thing I did) so I'll give everybody a heads up tomorrow. I also made my off book date to be April 1st.
I think it's fair to have the off book date at the end of the second rotation in the Blackbox. Which is April 3rd. All of you can set a date earlier, but it should be no later than April 3rd.
ReplyDeleteToday was my first day of directing and it was awesome. At first I was kind of nervous, but then I remembered that the people I'm working with are awesome, I am awesome, and this whole spring play collaboration is awesome. Seeing my play actually performed hilariously by a fantastic cast. Awesome. Managing to do a loose blocking of the entire play. Awesome. Forgetting to tell them to write all the blocking down. Not so awesome, but I'm writing it down right now, so awesome may prevail. Everything's awesome.
ReplyDeleteAwesome.
ReplyDeleteALSO, are people taking up black box time tomorrow..or should we maybe play a bonding game with EVERYONE? Just a thought.
ReplyDeletei'm having issues getting people into the mindset of my play, how do i get people to be serious but use the same energy they would use when acting comical?
ReplyDelete1 Michael Bennett...you exude awesomeness! I'm jealous of your awesome rehearsal. Sounds pretty awesome.
ReplyDelete2 Kacie: I agree with that idea, but we talked and you said you'd blog it. I know Sam signed up for blackbox time but I think we should do group bonding till at least 4:30 and then if we need to do acting work from there...so be it. Yes? No? I'm sure we'll discuss in class, but anyone else have thoughts? We can come up with fun games to get people going, get them thinking outside there comfort zone and excited about spring play madness!
3 Andre...I had a similar issue. But instead it seemed more disrespect for me and their fellow actors who weren't perfect but trying and WE JUST STARTED! Laughing during serious moments is discouraging and rude. Should we bring that up as a collective talking point?
darby and andre! yes we should i think maybe make a little announcement just about respecting directors and fellow actors you know? laughing when someone is reading a serious monologue is discouraging for both the actor and director and it's INAPPROPRIATE(channelling Ensign Simmons).
ReplyDeletefirst order of business:
Today was my first day in the blackbox!! And it went sooo well. I was surprised but I just like went through the whole show with everyone with the music. People didn't really talk much but when they would even start to get a little side-tracked i would just be like okay pay attention! like not in a mean way but in a "everyone needs to hear this" way...everyone seemed to really respond to that. I think maybe as long as you don't let it escalate?...if that makes sense...it worked for me!
NEXT ORDER OF BUSINESS:
soo....a certain person didnt come today...and im confused that she's confused. Kacie...you and i talked about this. haha so what should i do? i told kyle (mr. moore) that i cant keep explaining my show over and over you know? because its not like a short explanation...its a little lengthy. I'm just afraid that she's gonna end up quitting last minute, you know? are there any updates as to what's going on?
p.s. we have to work on all being there on time like the cast too because at 3:15 today it was literally like 5 actors and 5 directors listening to gettin jiggy with it...
p.s. i saw this emotion exercise that was like.....you bring in something with short directions on the back (like a shampoo bottle or something) and give someone an emotion and make them read the directions while channelling that emotion. haha good stuff.
ReplyDeleteOk. Lots to comment on. I think the number one issue of the night is people taking things seriously. You can certainly bring that up with your casts. Be firm. Point out the serious moments. Sometimes, students working under student directors try to test out boundaries. So, just be firm and exact about the intentions of lines and moments in your show. Keep on it. Find ways to discuss the issues or emotions going on at certain moments. Sometimes people laugh because they are confused or embarrassed; that might be something to talk about.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Mike Bennett said that that person who wasn't there was at an extended Extra Help session. I can speak more about that in person tomorrow...though I don't have specifics, I can share something from the fall that came up.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Mike has a wonderful hallway project for the entire group one day after break. Making clothes entirely covered in post-it notes! Yeah!
ReplyDeletemy dad is friends with a woman who used to stick post-it notes on herself and walk around in public with them on so she wouldn't forget anything.......i just thought that might've been relevant.
ReplyDeleteOne of my biggest fears for my play is not having any semblance of a costume crew (aside from Mike and his post-it notes). Does anyone know where I could find people/a person willing to help with costuming in May?
ReplyDeletere: Darby
ReplyDeleteI think there are other people signed up for the Blackbox too this afternoon, so you guys could just do a running group game and the 3 people in there can shuttle their people in and out. And I agree that getting people there at 3:15 is just as important as people leaving early, because the earlier we start, the more time we have to get stuff done with our groups. Also, each director can have more time in the Blackbox...although it had been a while since I heard "Miami" even though Phil never had
Sean and Kacie we will be blocking the last scene in my play to basically finish the blocking....hopefully we can run through the play tomorrow during class even though it is a half day
ReplyDeleteOk, I discussed with Houston today during class and I understand the whole leaving early issue now. I'm on board. Just someone keep me busy otherwise I will get sad. I don't know if im necesarily having an issue with respect from the cast as of right now but I'll help keep people in check if people seem to be getting disrespectful. What's going on today with the Black Box? I don't get it.
ReplyDeletei understand our new plan for working in the hallway and i'm on board. i apologize to anyone who felt that i was angry about it or not being a team player with it all. i didn't mean to come off that way, or be disrespectful. i'm all about us working together and i'll stay there as long as you need me to i just think we should be productive with it. I think that yesterday there wasn't really any actors in the hallway doing nothing but i also know that not all actors came or stayed like they were supposed to. if more actors stay i think we can find something productive for them to do.
